New Year Wishes To You

Hello dear friends! I hope you are having a blessed beginning to this New Year and may it be a wonderful year for each of you and your dear ones filled with happiness and blessings from the Lord. It is quite cold here today, but the sun is shining brightly through the pines giving them a lovely glow. The birds have been busy emptying the feeders my dear husband filled up this morning, delighting us with their beauty and sweet songs.

I recently recorded a nature journal entry of a Tufted Titmouse. They are so cute and have such large eyes. They have a lovely song too. We are very blessed to have our home here in the country, which enables us to enjoy so many more songbirds than when we lived in the city. I especially think living by the lake attracts a great deal more of them. But, we enjoyed quite a bit of nature in our city life just the same. So, wherever you may live, you can attract birds by simply putting out a feeder. A bird bath and pretty flowers will be appreciated and enjoyed by your bird friends too, as well as being a blessing to you!

My drawing of a Tufted Titmouse. (I am still learning how to draw!)

A few antique finds to share with you. Though we have Beatrix Potter The Complete Tales I could not pass up this sweet book. Currently I am enjoying reading Beatrix Potter: A Life In Nature. It is well-written and so very interesting. I have certainly been encouraged in my efforts to keep a nature journal by reading it. The Victorian mug was an exciting find and looks lovely with the other two my husband and son have given me in years past. They are hard to find, at least in my area, and it was on sale too. The small vintage cup reads, "Think Of Me" and the old field guide is just charming. I also found two others, Insects and Mammals.

I found this vintage handmade quilt a few months ago and was delighted to find it was only $15. There is just a small amount of damage and the antique dealer offered it to me for $12 and I did not even ask! I thought that was so sweet of her. The hand quilting is so beautiful. You can see a lot of love and time went into making this.

I have been sewing up hearts for gifts and decorations for Valentines Day. I added organic lavender and they smell so lovely.

I sewed vintage buttons on them for a bit of embellishment.

I love to bake for my dear husband and sweet son. I recently made them some homemade organic cupcakes, or as I have read they are called in beautiful England, fairy cakes. I just love that!

My son liked the ones with chocolate chips on top and my husband liked the ones with coconut. Here is the recipe, I use all organic ingredients.

Chocolate Cupcakes

2 1/4 cups unbleached white flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 3/4 cup sugar (I used Rapadura)
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
1 1/3 cups cold water

Line muffin pan with paper cups. Stir together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl beat butter until light and fluffy, add sugar and vanilla; beat until well combined. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Add flour mixture and water alternately to beaten mixture, beating after each addition just until combined. Pour batter into the prepared cups until half full.

Bake in a 350 oven for 25 minutes (I begin checking mine at 15 minutes) until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool throughly, then frost with desired frosting.

For the frosting, I combined a large block of cream cheese, softened, with one stick of butter, also softened, until light and fluffy, then I added 1/2 cup of Rapadura and 1 teaspoon of vanilla and mixed it well. You may use powdered sugar, or use one of your favorite frosting recipes, then add any toppings that you like! Enjoy!

I leave you with a lovely photo my son took of the lake.

May you have a wonderful weekend and coming week! Thank you so very much for the sweet and encouraging comments each of you have left for me in this past year. I am so grateful and so blessed to know so many sweet ladies and to have made such kind friends!

If instead of a gem, or even a flower, we should cast the gift of a loving thought into the heart of a friend, that would be giving as the angels give. ~George MacDonald

What a treasure you found in that quilt for 12.00!

I love bird-watching too but we live close enough to a large town that songbirds are few and far between.

Blessings Paula for sharing your little corner of the world in such a delightful way :o)

And you know the Tufted Titmouse is one of my favorite birds!! When we lived in Florida we traveled hours to find one and here in SC they come to our feeders everyday, my hubby just look at each other in disbelief sometimes!! They are the cutest and your drawing is PRECIOUS!! Gosh I'm amazed at all of your accomplishments!
The pink pretties make me sooo happy just to look at them :) You really scored with that pretty quilt ;) I'm so happy it was you that got it, you can appreciate all the work & love that went into it. Oh and your little hearts are sooo sweet, just like your lil' heart, beautiful xo
The cuppycakes look super yummy!! I would have a hard time choosing which one I'd like better ;)
How lovely to have a lake on your property, my hubby would just love that!! He was quite the fisherman in Florida, and he has lots of "fish stories" hehehe :)

Dear Paula
I have been so refreshed and inspired this morning! Every picture is delightful! Such a wonderful thing to keep a nature journal! I wish I had the time to do so--it was a part of education and life back in the 1700's. And you must be able to learn so much, not to mention the challenge, disipline, and mind-exercise of drawing. (you drew that bird quite well and you will only get better!)
Your lovely, handmade things, your lovely quilt, your books, and your serene lake view--all very special and full of delight!
Always a Blessing to visit here--Blessings to You!

As others have said, what a terrific find in your beautiful quilt! And did you fashion the pillows shown? They are gorgeous, also.
I must go now to finish peeking around your lovely blog.

Oh! Dear Paula~
You are most welcome to "copy my idea" about the birds seen on our farm. It will be fun to see the different kinds you have down your way! They are such a joy to watch, aren't they?

Oh Paula, you have such a pretty home. It truly is a real rose cottage. I love your nature journal. We don't have the tufted titmouse in Britain so its nice to see your drawing (very well done might I say). Good old Beatrix Potter, I love her style. She used to live in the village near here and now millions of tourists every year flock to her old farm cottage. All our shops are FULL of Beatrix Potter items (you'd love it!!) Fairy cakes...yes they were called that when I was a girl but now they are always called cup cakes. I'm with your husband, I will have a coconut one please when I come to call. Look forward to see more sketches in your lovely nature journal (no aligators I hope!!!!) love Eli

Dear Paula,
I love your drawing of the Titmouse ~ I think I can only draw stick figures!
The Victorian mug is so pretty with the roses, and I love the one that says "Think of Me."
Beatrix Potter is a favorite, those little books are so cute ~ how I would love to draw like that! My favorite has always been Mrs. Tiggy Winkle, I told my kids if we ever get another cat that would be her name!
What a deal you got on the quilt, and such a pretty one at that!
Your little hearts are so sweet, I have always loved Valentine's Day ~ could it be all the pink and roses!:)
If at some point you have time, could you maybe share your recipe for the cupcakes ? I love the idea of calling them fairycakes!

I hope you and your family have a wonderful week and weekend too ~
I wanted to thank you for all the sweet comments you leave on my blog. Your blog is always such a treat to visit.

Hello again Paula. Just a quickie to let you know I have tagged you on my post today. Your blog is so pretty and thoughtfully written I wanted others to see it. This tagging thing is a blogland game which is fun but it can be a bit time consuming so I'll quite understand if you don't want to paticipate. The rules of the game are at the bottom of my post. Here in the UK we've been hearing all about the plane crash on the Hudson River. So nice to have good news for a change with a happy ending. It is indeed a miracle. Have a nice weekend, love Eli

Dear Paula,
I hope you and your family are doing well
I baked the chocolate cake and it was amazing! I didn't have any cupcake liners so I made a layer cake instead with the cream cheese frosting. It was gone in two days!
Thank you for sharing such a great recipe.
I didn't know you could not eat any grains. I am guessing you have allergies ~ for me that would be such a trial, I think I could live on bread.
Can you believe it is almost the end of January ~ I wonder where the time as gone??!

Sending you love,
Laurie
