Our Cottage Bedroom And Garden News

Hello dear friends! Thank you so much for visiting me. I hope you all are having a wonderful and peaceful weekend! We had such lovely weather today we were able to work in the garden. It was so nice to be out of doors in the fresh cool air with the sun shining and song birds fluttering near us whilst eating the seed I put out for them in the feeders. We were blessed to see and hear one of my favorites, the beautiful White-breasted Nuthatch. We also saw Carolina Chickadees, American Goldfinches, Northern Cardinals and sparrows. I am so thankful for our little bird friends that the Lord has blessed us with, so thankful for this peaceful place of ours in the country. We have been here a little over two years and I love the quite. When we lived in the city it was so loud!

My dear husband and I groomed Pearl the Poodle this morning, I will have to take a picture of her, she looks so pretty. Then we planted two blueberry bushes. I am so excited, and I pray they will do well and provide us with an abundance of blueberries! My husband and son added compost to our raised beds that are empty and worked it in. The soil is looking so much better. Our lettuces, chard, peas, arugula, beets, carrots, green onions, and parsley are all growing and doing well. Thankfully they survived the freezes we have had this past week. It even snowed a little Thursday morning. When I got up the ground was misted in white. It was so lovely. We have been enjoying the lettuces from our garden and the green onions and parsley. The other things are still growing. I will take a photo soon to share with you. I am so excited about spring. The seed catalogs are arriving, and it is so difficult to choose from all the beautiful heirloom veggies and flowers. I hope to order an old pink rose bush soon. Our Rose Cottage by the Lake is in need of more roses!!!

My sweet and thoughtful husband went to the antique store one day after work last week and brought home this old shutter and a basket for me. He is painting the basket white, so I will share a photo when it is finished. I decided to hang a few vintage hankies and a pretty painted sign on the shutter. I thought it may be too tall to sit atop the dresser, but my husband and son liked it, so I think it will stay for now.

This is my antique vanity that we found in a lovely antique store in Texas that a dear friend of mine owns. I enjoy displaying some of my vintage pretties on top of it.

Vintage postcards, a few poodle figurines and a photo of my sweetie pie son when he was just a little boy. Children grow up so fast. I can hardly believe he is a young man of 13. I treasure everyday with him and enjoy all the time we spend together. We love to read the Bible, G.A. Henty and Ballantyne books the best. History is our favorite thing to learn about.

I have had this Bible since I was a little girl, and it is starting to fall apart, so I have it on my vanity with an old pair of lace gloves and a knitted purse. It reminds me, like the vintage hankies do, of a time when ladies always wore gloves and hats. I have seen a photo of my grandmother when she was a young lady wearing a hat, gloves, shoes with purse to match and a beautiful dress. She looked so pretty and feminine.

You can see our Victorian shaving mug collection on this shelf. My sweet friend Karen that owns the antique store in Texas told me that when gentlemen would go to the barber for a shave the shaving mugs would be lined up on a shelf and they would know their own shaving mug by the roses on it. Isn't it wonderful that something so beautiful was used simply for a man's shave?

Last week we purchased a can of pink paint to paint the wall behind our bed. This is the before photo and I will share the after once it is finished. I saw a lovely bedroom in a magazine and one wall behind the bed was painted pink. It was so pretty. My husband is a dear to allow so much pink and my little annie dolls here and there. He is so kind and good-natured and always encourages me in everything I do. Isn't it wonderful to hear a kind word? It reminds me how words are very important and I must choose what I say carefully. Two verses that I have been memorizing are:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21

and

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. Proverbs 12:18

I desire to speak life and health into my husband, son and others. May the Lord help me to use my words wisely and to build up others... which makes me think of this verse.

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. Proverbs 14:1

May the Lord help me to be a wise woman too, as I cannot do anything apart from Him! (John 15:5)

In my previous post of forgot to share a full view of my laundry room. Can't you just see a shelf above the window with a few things displayed on it and how about three more vintage plates on the opposite side of the window, and a nice rug on the floor? I also need to make some tiebacks for my curtains!

Thank you all for your sweet comments about my laundry room. It is a very pleasant room to do laundry in, and I am very thankful for it. In our previous home my laundry room was in the garage, like some of you shared that yours was, so I do understand. When we purchased this home, one of the things we were so happy about was that the laundry room was inside!

I hope you all have a wonderful Lord's day tomorrow, many blessings to each of you!

Such pretty delicate things you have.

I too have the Bessie Pease Gutmann's "A Busy Day in Dollville" as you and Laurie. I have always admired her precious artwork. I had several framed baby images of her artwork in my childrens rooms when they we're babies.

I do think some more vintage china plates would look great on the other side of the curtains.

Look forward to seeing your pink wall in the bedroom!

Your laundry room is so spacious! What a terrific place to fold items on the counter. And so much storage, too!
After reading your first post about your laundry room, I did pause to think how I might "fix up" the part of the garage where the washer and dryer are. But decided against it. I would have to remove a great portion of Gentleman Farmer's cronologicly arranged deer antlers (from years of hunting)to accomplish it. Someday, when our basement is finished I will have a nice spot there. He can rest assured now that his "man wall" is safe!
I love all your vintage items, especially your childhood Bible and the gloves and purse. The vanity they sit on is sweet. And I never knew each gentleman had his own shaving mug!
I do like shutters and how sweet of your husband to bring one home for you. Looks so nice with the little pocket hankins!
Yes, isn't it so true the power of the tongue! To hurt or to help, to encourage or to tear down. It is always so refreshing to come to your lovely blog and find an encouraging word and lovely pictures.
Blessings!

I recently displayed some shutters as well. My brother gave them to me a while ago and they have sat in my storage room. I dug them out a couple of weekends ago and put them on a dresser I had just finished painting. I hung some frames on it and my husband and son commented on how nice it looked!! I still want to add some roses or something else to it to pretty it up a bit! Come check out my blog and you will see the pics.

Hello Paula!

Another beautiful post! I am struck by how neat you are; I am a "messy!" I have improved so much since I've been married out of respect for my husband (he is a "neaty"); but I always still seem to have stuff lying around! I am glad for you to have a laundry room; we spend so much time doing chores that it's nice to have a pretty place to work in. Very inspirational homemaker you are! Thank you for the compliment on my "car babies." There is something about those Annie dolls that is irresistable!

Oh, I wanted to ask you (no hurry on the reply), but I receive a catalog (The Vision Forum) which offers G.A. Henty & Ballantyne books. They also highly recommend "Elsie Dinsmore." I was able to find "Elsie Dinsmore" in the library and simply didn't like its over-moral slant (that's the only way I can describe it; they just don't talk like we do in the book - the characters were sort of unreal in the way they visited about what they were doing). I do enough moralizing to my kids throughout the day! Bless their hearts! Any way, I wasn't able to find the Henty or Ballantyne books so I was wondering if they are written in that type of style or if they are more interesting to read (more true to life of how people actually interact with each other)? We love history, too. We use Sonlight - I have read a lot on Charlotte Mason and I get the impression that Sonlight is strongly based on her methods (and Sonlight provides the pre-researched books! I don't think I could choose on my own!)

Have a nice week.

Paula,
I have visited a couple times before, but never commented.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home. I especially like the figurines and gloves. It reminds me of my grandmother who loved to wear her gloves as she carried her pocketbook and Bible to church. She always had a scent of Jergen's (glass dispenser)~cherry/almond.
Have a blessed day.

Dear Paula,
It was a joy to read this beautiful post!!
How exciting about your gardening endeavors! Indeed, it sounds like there would be nothing more delightful than fresh lettuce, green onions and etc.. right from your own garden!! I hope to do more gardening this year even though we have many deer and quite a few gophers that make it almost impossible. My plan is to purchase some big planter boxes and then plant in them. I know it's not as old fashioned as planting in the ground...but I still think it's worth the try! ;) Dear, Paula thank you for encouraging me in the beauty of gardening! I love all your vintage items and the beautiful scriptures you shared. How powerful scripture is in regards to the tongue. Reading verses like the ones you quoted can truly humble us indeed to think and pray before we speak!
Hope you and your family had a blessed Sabbath day! Many Blessings to you, dear friend!! ;)

Love in Jesus,
Miss Jen

Thank you for sharing your home with us Paula. It is so soft and feminine. I think husbands feel happier in pretty homes like yours. The world is so full of dark stories and sadness so to come home each day to lightness and happiness must be a restful and reasuring (the domain of a lovely wife and mother, what husband wouldn't feel content). You have some lovely things with an intersting story to tell...just one thing...have you thought about painting the cupboards in your laundry room a pretty shade of pink? It might suit them. Have a happy week with your garden catalogues Paula (I envy you your weather), love Eli.

Everything is so pretty Paula. I love the hankies, I collect those too and your idea of them all hanging on the line gives me inspiration.

You are lucky to have a husband who allows pink in the bedroom--I had picked out a mauve and my dh asked nicely, "any other color please just not pinks":-) So, off to find another color...LOL!

Dear Paula,

I so love hearing about your day in the garden with the sweet birds, planting, planning with the seed catalogs and your plans for an old pink rose bush. Sounds like a perfect "Tasha Day"! Your husband is so sweet to bring you home surprises! I love old shutters. Your vanity is so lovely with all the pretty treasures sitting around. I love an old worn bible. I had one just like that when I was a little girl that zipped up! I love your collection of shaving mugs. I am excited to see your pink wall! Love all the pretty pillows on your bed! I bet you made each and every one! Just beautiful! Your laundry room is so big and you are so lucky to have that sink!!!

Dear Paula,

Oh, everything is so pretty! I love lace gloves, and the hankies look so nice on the shutter. What a sweet, treasure of a husband you have! I'm sure he must feel blessed to have such a feminine wife.

The garden goodies sound scrumptious, too. I'm glad you're able to garden year-round; what a blessing. Maybe we'll move closer to you!

And I am so glad that you are such a very encouraging, precious spirit; I feel so blessed by your friendship, though we have never met.

Love,

Dear Paula,
How lovely everything is ~ your cottage bedroom is beautiful. I love all the little vignettes you have created. The way you have your bible and gloves displayed makes me think it could be Meg's from Little Women. I would love for women to wear hats and gloves again...I have a few photos of my Mom wearing hers.
I like the shutter where it is too, adds some nice height!
Glad your garden is doing well, I have noticed we have some lettuce popping up that we planted last year! I hope we have a nice garden this year...I can dream!
I love your shaving mugs, I have two, both with roses. My hubby thinks its funny that men used to use those. He is good natured too about my pink decorating!
My Mom used to say "if you can't say something nice about somebody, don't say anything at all." Good words to live by, and one I must admit I struggle with, I have a bit of a quick tongue and then regret what I say.
I am glad I visited today your blog is always so uplifting.

Love,
Laurie

P.S. Love your laundry room ~ its so big!!

Hello Dear Friends,
As always you have done a wonderful job. I went to my favorite antique store this week end and picked up a few things with roses on them. I will have to do a post for you to see. I can't wait to see your pink bedroom. As you know my house is painted pink. My dh doesn't mind all my frills and pink. We are truly blessed to have such easy going husbands.
Hugs and Love,
Elizabeth

Hello Dear Paula!
I can't imagin a day outside in the garden right now--it sounds like a wonderful day! I've planted some crocus indoors--hope to force some tulips this weekend--I'm thankful I can bring a little touch of Spring in the cabin.
As soon as this very cold weather that we have been having passes, I'm going to get back into walking Buck--snow or not!
I loved EVERYTHING about your lovely bedroom and the new shutter does look just perfect the way you have it displayed.
How I savored the verses too and I'm looking forward to seeing your sweet little Pearl--Buck sends her a hug!
Loved being here--it is inspiring!
Love and God's Blessings to you!

Dear Paula, Thank you for visiting with me this morning on my blog. I enjoyed my visit to yours too! You have such pretty things. I like the little hankie clothesline and I do think pink would look so pretty behind your bed and a little shelf above the window in your laundry room.
What I like about the high-up shelves in my own home - I don't have to dust them very often because you can't see it 'way up there! ;-)

You have a sweet blog! So nice to have met you.

Hello Darling girl!!
Thank you so, so much for stopping by wren cottage and your sweet note!! I had a huge grin on my face reading your sweet words :) You have to be the sweetest thing ever!! I would just love to visit and talk about gardening with you...which is what I was doing today :) Our weather warmed up for the weekend and I was able to get out there and clean the beds and move a few butterfly bushes around... a sweet titmouse stopped by for a nibble and was singing the cutest song, I think he was trying to impress a certain little girl titmouse ;) anyways I immediately thought of you and how lovely it would be to share it with you dear friend :)
Our little boy wren was been visiting us again and eating mealworms, he is soooo adorable!
I pulled out all my seed packets and was dreaming about that patch of forget me nots again... I'll be leaving on 2-19 for about 10 days so I will wait until I get back to start some indoors, I don't think it will be too late, hopefully...
I hope you & your family had a lovely weekend.
I can't tell you how nice it is to "chat" with you, sometimes I feel like we are actually "talking"... I feel there is a true understanding between you & I my darling friend :)
Thank you so much for your friendship!
Sending you lots of love and a little kiss for Pearl :)

Well you already know how much I love those rose shaving mugs. Your bedroom is such a peaceful space. Light, airy, relaxing (as apposed to my mess bedroom : -) I-spy a vintage post card on your vanity. I have mine on my kitchen queen and see it when I bake. I have to say I never remember seeing my mom or grandma in gloves and hat but I think that is because we were in CA. It is sooo casual there. I look forward to sharing your pink wall. Love Clarice
